April, 8, 2013

Waking up on Saturday to a beautiful spring day was something else! After a week of gloomy, cold days it really changed the mood of everyone around me (even my teenage daughters!)

I’ve had insomnia for weeks thinking about the work I have cut out for me regarding various events DNR was participating in, speaking engagements as well as producing our upcoming Burlesque Show at THE SLIPPER ROOM. We are movin’ and shakin’.. !

But today was a day of inspiration that warmed my heart like no other. I was invited to go to St. Patrick’s Catherdral for their tribute to DONOR FAMILIES/RECIPIENTS. It was a non-Denominational Celebration service.

My girls and I decided to take a leisurely walk thru Central Park (with our friend Bill who we ran into) and get to church. Cutting thru the park is always an adventure. There were so many tourists that WE felt like we were visiting! No one spoke English. There were so many living/moving statues of LADY LIBERTY.. some were way overweight and others were men! Only in NY! It was awesome!

When we arrived at the church it was packed! I was thinking about each person there and wondering what brought them here; which side they were on whether it was due to losing a loved one or someone who’s gotten a second chance at life. The whole church was filled with enormous energy of love and selflessness. It was the only place to be on the planet as far as I could tell, though St. Barths could be a close second : )

Listening to everyone’s stories just solidified that what we are doing with DNR was right on target.. though in my mind.. I now know we haven’t touched our potential. This particular service was so enlightening, magical, spiritual.. it just touched upon every aspect of organ donation and how it brings life back, as I like to say, it ‘recycles life.’

Anyway, I walked out of there with my girls (and Bill of course!) and walked back thru the park with that enormous feeling of love in my heart. It was truly a day to remember.

I have to shout out to Jordana Holovach of JACOB’S CURE as she introduced me to a few very special new friends from SHARE LIFE, Carol and Howard Romanoff, Keri and Stuart Zaro, whom opened their arms and welcomed me, DNR into their lives : )

(photo credit; Stuart Zaro, photographer and a dear friend of Howard)

Happy spring! xp

March 30th, 2013

I can’t sleep! It’s dark, it’s quiet and my creative mind is racing! I have been working diligently with one of our fearless designers (I’m in NY, he’s in LA) to get a tee shirt design finished for an amazing new ‘salon’ (not like a hair salon but… Definition: (noun) – Salon, from the French word salon (a living room or parlor), means a conversational gathering. Usually this is a select group of intellectuals … in this case, it’s an AIR STREAM located in Houston called, VELVET SLIPPER A GO-GO which will showcase all kinds of artists, designers and become a mobile creative consortium that will broadcast radio! Talk about inspiring! DNR’s Sara, will be there for their launch. She will be on their radio show talkin’ the DNR talk! Pretty exciting!

Nonetheless, April is approaching and we are getting ready for so many events to honor ORGAN DONOR AWARENESS MONTH! Our event in NYC at the SLIPPER ROOM is less than two weeks away along with our FIESTA in Connecticut at THE BIANCA BOUTIQUE.

Then we will be visiting TUFTS UNIVERSITY where I will be speaking to the student body thanks to one of our COLLEGE CAMPUS AMBASSADORS, Rae Steinbach. A shout out to her sorority. I can’t wait to meet everyone : )

Also in April, I will be joining THE NY ORGAN DONOR NETWORK in ALBANY to face the legislation to discuss OD and how DNR’s mission/marketing plans can better the situation we have now. - I’m grateful to be invited to lobby with such an inspirational group of people.

Yowza! Lots to do. My check list for April seems endless. Sara, my partner in crime has been amazing during these past few months! She’s almost as crazy as me and her sense of humor is just as warped. She makes work a lot of fun though sometimes the deadlines are not so fun!

I have been working on our product line. Hopefully soon enough, DNR will not only carry tees/tags, but everything from hoodies, jeans, skateboards, leather jackets, jewelry and more!

So, spring is here. I was in Central Park yesterday with Sage and Piper and we all noticed that the trees were bursting with buds which means in another week or so, the park will be blossoming with colors and fragrances that we absolutely love! Best time of year I’d say.

My family of ‘Meadow’ friends will be playing music and throwing frisbees with me and I will be smiling for the months to come : )

Lots of love and happy times,

Hi everyone,

First, thanks for visiting our website! We are getting close to spring and I am super excited as my motorbike will be out before I can say, ‘SPRING!’

I’ve been asked by my partner to post a response I wrote today to a woman inquiring about the mission of DNR and this is what I sent her to clarify what we are about. I’m posting this in case anyone is unclear. I tried to sum it up quickly. Here it is:

I was forwarded your email regarding your concern about DNR. I am the creator of the company, Pamela Lubell and I would like to tell you in brief how the company got started and what our mission is.

I was visiting my friend Scott in Los Angeles a few years ago, who’s dad had both heart and kidney transplants. When Scott told me the story of how his dad had a heart attack and then wound up on life support then was put on a waiting list for a heart transplant, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

A waiting list? I never even knew there was such a thing as I never knew anyone in this situation before. While waiting helplessly for his match, his had kidney failure and needed a transplant for that too. Thankfully he received both body parts and to this day, is doing super and has 6 grandchildren!

Scott then continued with his dad’s story: To make this more intense, Scott’s dad’s cardiologist said, ‘You’re going to have to wait for a 3 day weekend because that’s when donorcyclists get hit and more parts become available’, which is exactly what happened. This is when I realized, I WAS THAT PERSON the doctor was referring to as I am a motorbike rider and I wasn’t a registered organ donor. I immediately had a brainstorm which is how DNR came into fruition.

I flew back to NYC, while on the plane, I sketched out graphics, wrote down dozens of quotes (I thought were clever for reaching the masses with my message in a quirky, fun way) presented the idea to my now partners, became a registered organ donor and we incorporated DNR NYC, INC.

As I have been in the entertainment industry and well connected to Hollywood, I wanted to take time off of my usual career for something I thought would be much more meaningful and I also thought, I could make a real difference as I am a visionary, an artist and have a proven track record of success. My mission: To help eliminate the waiting list for people in need of organs.

Please do not judge me or my partners for trying our best to spread the word of organ donor awareness through a fashion brand. I think our message is loud, clear and we are going about it in an unconventional way which gets people’s attention. If motor vehicles and the NY Health Dept were able to get the word out better, there would be no reason to spread the word.

The reason our tees are as you say, ‘pricey’ is because we only had a small budget to get the company going and had to do it grass roots and manufactured tees with premium cottons and the minimum quantities were expensive and small. We are doing our best.

I have three other partners who, like me, have not been personally affected by this, but understand the difference we can make if we work hard, diligently and productively. I think outside the box and really feel like DNR’s products could make people understand the importance of registering to become OD’s. Like other for-profit companies, they pick and choose where they contribute to charities. Ours happen to be charities affiliated with organ donation.

I hope I have answered any questions you had as I want to make sure you understand what this company’s goals are. It’s a for-profit company that is trying really hard to get the word out for people to register to become OD. We are just getting our products out there and any exposure we have (right now it’s in movies/tv/politics) is good exposure. Any press we get, is great. It gets people’s attention.

I have compromised my career to get this off the ground in hopes that one day my friends, family as well as strangers like you, would not have to wait for an organ if they need one. I appreciate you reaching out and I hope I have given you some insight into DNR and it’s message/mission.

As far as organizations, we work with the NEW YORK ORGAN DONOR NETWORK pretty closely and are doing our best to get DNR up and running. The bigger DNR gets, the more awareness we get across to the public. I have meetings set up next week with college kids who I think will be able to spread the word across campuses about the importance to register to become OD.

I wish you the best.

With respect,

Pamela (Excuse any typos as I wrote this quickly while working : )

I woke up this morning (in NYC) and the sun was as bright as it could be. After a night out with my partner Sara and our friends Dana, Julie and Guy (Guy’s a super talented artist, check him out @ http://www.philochestudios.com/) I was super inspired and ready to start my day.

My morning coffee was definitely needed as it was a night filled with late night snacks and lots of laughter.

Waking up on Valentine’s Day is always sort of weird for me. As much as it’s a silly ‘Hallmark’ kind of holiday, there is always this awkward pressure to make something of it. I’m sure lots of you feel this way. Shouldn’t expressing your love be done everyday? I don’t get it.. but like everyone, I too, buy into it to a certain degree.

If only the chocolate was darker than dark and the flowers were orchids. If there was no baby breath inserted into the dozens of roses.. and we bought cool tees with graphics on them instead and let the flowers live and grow in the earth.. What about these tees’ graphics promoting organ donor awareness or something! HMMM? Just sayin’… !

In any case, enjoy the day.. DONATE your LOVE.. if you’re a man.. DONATE YOUR ORGAN : )

As I always say, I am a woman with a warped mind but good intentions : )

RECYCLE LIFE.

Hi ALL,

I have great news. Our trunk show was such a success that we were asked to have our merchandise sell at the pro shop. This means we will build more awareness about organ donation as members of the club will be reminded of DNR’s message whenever they work out!

Super super! Have a great day! And if you’re in NYC and want the best hair care, check out Paul LaBrecque at one of his 3 locations: THE UES, THE CORE CLUB and THE REEBOK SPORTS CLUB. http://www.paullabrecque.com/ (fyi, Paul’s a registered organ donor too)
